Eadweard Muybridge

Eadweard Muybridge

Born - 9th April 1830 

Died - 8th May 1904 

Important for his pioneering work of studying motion in photography and early motion picture project. 
Known as the Father of Motion Picture 

He emigrated to America aged 20 first to New York and then to San Fransisco before returning to England in 1861 and took up professional photography. 
Eadweard Muybridge shot his wife's lover in 1874 but was acquitted on the grounds of justifiable homicide.
Began as a landscape photographer before developing into a movement photographer.

I like this image because it clearly shows that passing off time. It does this detail really well and clearly shows off the passing of time through the movement of the woman dancing in the shots. I really like this image because it clearly shows the passing of time and therefore means that it shows off exactly what it is supposed to show off. This is similar with many off the photographs that Eadweard created. Many of the photographs that he created are a  set of photographs that work really well together and show clear movement over a short period of time showing of all the steps of getting through a simple movement. The fact that all his photographs are black and white links to the time period in which the photographs where colour photographs had not been invented. The fact that he has shown several frames in one photograph links to the fact that he also links to the beginning of cinematography and the images he creates almost look like a frame by frame piece of video footage

Tristan Savatier

Tristan Savatier is a long exposure photographer how has taken photographs of people dancing with fire. This is a very different thing to photograph and not many people photograph it and if they do it isn't to the same standard as Tristan Savatier. The fire traces are very clear are the patterns are complete making the picture look whole.



In this image by Tristan Savatier the pattern is very clear the fire path has been capture in a clear way because the whole fire trace can be seen. In this photograph he has capture a very detailed pattern and you can't see the person who is making the pattern clearly showing how fast the person is moving and showing the short amount of time they had to create this patter nso it could be captured in this photograph. 

In this image there is no clear pattern in this image but it works well at showing the passing of time due to the length of each fire sweep. In this image you can clearly see the person creating the shapes and this gives off the idea that anyone can do this talent and you can clearly see exactly what he is doing. The lack of clear patten add to the passing of time as it is like he is practising and this adds to the idea of time passing as it gives off the impression that he spend hours practising attempting to create the detailed patten.

In this image to pattern has been kept very simple and this helps add to the passing of time because you can clearly see the different thickness of the line and you can see the way in which the fire has been dragged. This image give the idea that the circle is on going and therefore you can envision the idea that the circle is still being drawn because the circle has no end it is ongoing and that is the idea of the picture.

In this image the passing of time is shown through the pattern and therefore it shows the time that has been taken in order to really highlight the passing of time. In this image the persons face is blurred by the fire and therefore suggests that it doesn't matter who is creating the pattern as it is only the pattern that matters. The passing of time is also seen through the fact that the body is all blurred and you can't really make out the body and this shows that the man has been moving showing the passing of time. 

Tristan Savatier has influenced me because he has shown me that anything interesting and detailed can show the passing of time and that if you are doing a pattern in a light colour it is best to have it on a darker background in order to make it stand out. He has also influenced me and given me new ideas that I could photography throughout unit 2. 

To summarise I feel that Tristan Savatier has shown me that sometimes you can get a very good photograph and not have to edit them very much. Tristan Savatier has also given me different ideas to consider throughout the project and helps to show the passing of time is a clear and considered way. I like that these images have shown the passing of time and therefore he was a good photographer to look at due to the very unique use of a fire trace.

Kang Seon Jun

Kang Seon Jun is a photographer that uses a continuous shot to show the passing of time. The continuous shots show off ever part of the movement and that shows every slight movement that the dancer goes through in order to get to the end of the movement. King Seon Jun uses the contrast of black and white to make the movement stand out. 

In this image the only movement is of the arms and this shows a very short period of time as the movement of the arms wouldn't take that long. The continuous shot allows the person viewing the photograph go clearly see the arm at different points in the process and this way of photographing the passing of time really show off a tiny amount of time passing in a clear way. 

This image shows off the passing of time through both through the clear movement of the arms and the blurred movement of the legs. This photograph shows both continuous shooting and long exposure due to the fact that the legs are blurred and the movement of them isn't clear. The contrast of colour makes the movement stand out and therefore draws the passing of time out throughout the photograph

The passing of time is shown differently within this photograph as the passing of time show through her dress you can see the time in which it has taken to get the dress to float in this way and this image provokes the idea of time passing rather than showing it because you can visualise the idea and process of the dress getting to that position but also falling down to return to its original position

In this image the passing of time is extremely clear and works together well due to how well the images have been combined. The images work well together and create a successful image that shows off the passing of time. This image uses a combination of movements in order to show the passing of time which isn't very typical of Kang Seon Jun's photography and how they work well together.

Kang Seon Jun has influenced me because I have learnt that there are multiple different ways in which to show the passing of time through the movement of people and that there are many different ways in which to present my work and to show the passing of time. I am also influenced with the colours that have been used and the idea that very simple colours keep the focus on the passing of time. 

To summerise Kang Seon Jun's work influences me a lot as I am looking at photographing dance and movement and Kang Seon Jun has opened my eyes as to a different way in which I can use this technique to really show off the passing of time and make it look very detailed and show everything it needs to. 

Alexey Titarenko

Alexey Titarenko is a photographer who uses long exposure to show the passing of time. I picked to look at his work because it is again a different style of photography and it uses a very different technique in order to show off the passing of time. He use long exposure to show the passing of time, 

In the photograph above Alexey Titerenko uses long exposure to show the passing of time as you can only just see some of the different people moving through the photograph. The people are clear and you can see that only a few people are in but you can see every move they make during the time the photograph is taken. This image shows the natural passing of time as nothing is forced or posed in these photographs they are all very natural and show a normal way of life.

In this image Alexey Titierenko has used long exposure in a very busy area to show the passing of the time. The number of people in the photograph has made it look very busy but the amount of people also help to show the passing of time because there is so much going on and none of the people can be seen in the photograph however you can make out some of them. The time that has passed is suggested to be a long period of time due to the amount of people being seen within the photograph. 

In this image the passing of time is show going up the stars at what would appear to be a train station. The exposure time adds to the idea of passing of time. In this image there is no one visible in the image and the gives the idea that they are moving fast and not stopping to even look at what is going on around them. The passing of time appears to be of an extended period of time as not that many people can go up the stairs at one point so it must be over a longer period of time due to the amount of blur in the picture.

In this photograph Alexey Titerenko has kept one person completely in focus and then the rest of the world has continued on around them, this has been done to show that the world doesn't stop for anyone. In this image the person has stood in the same place for a long time and this shows the passing of time as he isn't moving yet the rest of the world is. This photograph has kept the man clear and really shows off the movement over the time period. 

Alexey Titerenko has influenced my work in showing me that I can do long exposure photographs in the public and make them successful in showing the passing of time. His influence has also shown me that the photographs can look even more effective in black and white and can give off the desired effect that is needed. 

To summarise Alexey Titerenko is an artist who I really liked the work of and he has shown me a way in which to photograph long exposure shots in public and make them successful.  He has also shown me that making the photograph black and white can also look very good in this style of photography.

Jesús Chapa-Malacara

I picked Jesús Chapa-Malacara because I like the way in which he show a lot of detail even though it is only a very small amount of time that is passing. I like that he is able to show a lot of detail in his photographs and the way in which he shows how much can be done in just a small amount of time. Jesús Chapa-Malacara shows the passing of seconds in a very detailed and clear image. 



In the image above the movement of the whole body has been clearly shown through out the picture and the use of colour has been planned out well to help make the movements clear. The used of the colours also means that the person looking at the photograph can see where the top half of his body went and where his legs went. He has also kept the most central image whole where as the opacity of the others has been changed to make them blurred and appear as one fluid picture. 

In the image above the feet of the person is the only thing featured in the photograph and the photograph allows people to see the detail of a very simple ballet move. The image has been manipulated to make the movements appear more fluid and look very detailed. The final placement of the feet is the part that has been kept whole as this helps show that the movement has ended and that time has finished moving within the photograph. 

In this image a very different style of dance is shown Jesús Chapa-Malacara normally photographs ballet but in this photograph he has chosen to photograph street dance. This image helps show how little time it takes for them to get into their positions despite how difficult their movements are. The image shows how high they have to get their legs in such a small period of time. 

In the image above again the passing of time of clear and shown through fact that she makes her way from one side of the frame to the other and the movement helps show that the time has passed. This is a longer time period than others because she is making her way across the whole image and this is a bit of a longer dance piece. 

In the image above the passing of time is extremely clear due to the fluid change from on position to another and the movement and passing of time is clear. The white contrasts the black background and helps show the passing of time due to the fact that the whole movement can be clearly seen in the photograph. 

 Jesús Chapa-Malacara work is an influence to me because it shows me a simple way in which to show a short period of time in a very detailed way. He work has also influenced me because he uses a very simple style and it works really well and this different colours work really well on the black background and I will keep this in mind during shoots. 

To summerise I will use the influence of  Jesús Chapa-Malacara in my project as it shows off a difficult camera technique and a difficult editing techniques. I think that I will use this in my project to help show off my bettering technique when using my camera.

Tom Hussey

I picked to look at Tom Hussey because I think that the way in which he shows the passing of time is very different and unique. He is able to show the passing of time very clear and show the passing of an extended period of time because it is suggested that the person in the mirror is the younger version of the person in the room. Tom Hussey has used both good photography skills and high editing skills on Photoshop to show off the passing of time clearly. 

In the image above black and white has been used in order to show off the idea that the image has some age to it. It is suggested that the person in the mirror is the same person that is in the room and it has been made to look as if the man is looking back at what he used to look like however the person in the picture isn't the same person but the construction of the photograph makes the person looking at the photograph believe that the person looking in the mirror is looking back at what he used to look like. 

In the image above the setting of the photograph is just as important as the mirror image. The setting shows the age of the setting and really gives you the idea that even though time has moved on the women hasn't changed her house over time. In this image the women are doing a similar activity which has been reflected well within the mirror and has kept the continuous of the photographs and really show that the woman in the mirror is supposed to be and exact match of what the woman in the room is doing.

In this image the passing of time has been shown through the difference in the man in the mirror and the man in the room and how time has changed between.This image is on of only a few to show almost all of the persons body this has been done in order to really show off how much the man has changed over time and this is clearly done through the idea that he was a fireman but is now an old man with a stomach when he would have been physical fit when he was younger. 

This image holds a powerful message because someone who can look so normal and ordinary now can have an extremely hard and interesting past. This is shown from the fact that the old man is just in his pyjamas but the man in the mirror looks like he is off to war to fight and protect his country and therefore suggests that you don't know everything about a person or what they have gone through because of what you see in front of you. This photograph is really good at telling you to not judge a book by its cover because you never know what someone else has gone through. 

In this image it is clear that everything has been kept the same apart from the age of the person in the room. The job of the woman is clear and has been portrayed well through out the whole picture and makes it clear that even though she has aged she hasn't stopped doing what she loves and what she wants to do even though she has gotten older and this works really well in a picture showing that time passes quickly when you enjoy what you are doing. 


Tom Husseys work is an influence to me because it has shown me how I can show the passing of time over an extended period of time such as years and years. Hussey's work has also influenced me because it has shown me a different editing techniques that I could use and could work well with my topic and has allowed me to see another way in which I could take my topic. 


To summerise I will use the influence of Hussey's work into my project as I feel like this is a very different way to show the passing of time and the clearly show a long time passing between the pictures. The mirror works well and is a technique I used in unit 1 so this is a big influence for me because I know how to do it but this is showing me how to do it well.
